Behind the Music

Description

This is a picture of a blind man that was playing guitar and singing with on the street at Pike Street Market in Seattle, Washington, USA. He sang with such spirit and passion. Afterwards when he had traded out with the next guy playing in the same spot, he just stood in this spot singing his heart out to the music the current guy was playing. He sang with such joy. But as you see in this shot, his expression does not seem to have captured what I have just described to you. So I ask this question, "What is behind the music?" Is he worrying about where he will get his next meal or where he will sleep tonight? There really is no way of knowing for sure, but I would love to hear your thoughts. Thank you.

There really is something rather stirring about this photo... The depth of field for a start is fantastic, you managed to get the entire background out of focus, and leave the man standing there against all that. The ideas conjured witht he symbolism of things being blurry apart from him definitely give a lot more emphasis to the deep thought he appears to be in. And I can't help but think of the clarity in his mind that is obviously lacked in his ability to see.

Like you say, one has to wonder what he is thinking, the fact that his expression reveals something about the man that cannot previously be seen through his singign and playing. Was the music his source of happyness? Was it a way to feign happyness and cover his troubled heart? What does he think, what goes on his mind, what does it mean to be blind. The power of this image for me, really lies in the consideration of his thoughts. What they are, how they are focused, how his obvious joy in music correlates to the rest of his life.

There is something very deep going on this image Ryan, and it's very appealing!!! I looked at the image for a good 5 minutes before I even felt I had enough to comment with :) Well done! This truly is a fantastic photo!!
